What is Waxing?

Waxing is a form of semi-permanent hair removal which removes the hair  from the root. New hair will not grow back in the previously waxed area  for four to six weeks, although some people will start to see regrowth  in only a week due to some of their hair being on a different growth cycle. There are many types of waxing suitable for removing unwanted hair.

Strip waxing (soft wax) is accomplished by spreading a wax thinly over the skin. A cloth or paper strip is applied and pressed firmly, adhering the strip to the wax and the wax to the skin. The strip is then quickly ripped against the direction of hair growth, as parallel as possible to the skin to avoid trauma to the skin (i.e., bruising, broken capillaries, ingrown hairs caused by hair follicle trauma and lifting of skin). This removes the wax along with the hair. For larger areas, you will see me use a roller cartridge full of wax.  It is a single use device that is thrown away after your service.

Strip-less wax (as opposed to strip wax), also referred to as hard wax, is applied somewhat thickly and with no cloth or paper strips. The wax then hardens when it cools and then the wax is removed. This waxing method is very beneficial to people who have sensitive skin. Strip-less wax does not adhere to the skin as much as strip wax does, thus making it a good option for sensitive skin as finer hairs are more easily removed because the hard wax encapsulates the hair as it hardens. The strip-less waxing method can also be less painful.

I don't understand the hair growth cycle.
Why is it so important to stay on a schedule?

Hair grows in multiple cycles.

"Hair growth occurs in four distinct, cyclical stages:
Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), Telogen (resting), and Exogen (shedding). The cycle begins with active growth lasting 2–8 years, followed by a short 2-week transitional phase, a 3–4 month resting period, and finally, the shedding of old hair to allow new growth. Approximately 85–90% of follicles are in the growing phase, while 10–15% are in resting or shedding stages."

National Institutes of Health

The best time to wax while your hair is in the anagen phase, that is where we will see roots on the wax strip!  This means the follicle has been aggravated and hopefully it will never want to grow a hair again.  Pin prick bleeding from the follicle means it has been destroyed and will not produce a hair again!

Will it Hurt?

I am pretty sure by now you have seen a movie or television show where a person is getting waxed and they seem to be in the biggest pain of their life!  One of the most memorable was Steve Carell in 40 Year Old Virgin, where he is left with a smiley face on his chest. Yes, that is very funny but it does scare people off from trying the wax.  I have this fantastic cream called No Scream Cream.  You apply it to the area 40-50 minutes before your service and it will reduce the pain by up to 80%.  Imagine walking in to get waxed knowing that it will not hurt!  90% of the time, you will forget the pain of the wax by time you are through.  The results you will be see after your wax will make you want to stay waxed!  No Scream Cream retails for $20 and can be used all over the body.

Is Waxing permanent?

When you wax hair, you have the possibility of pulling the root of the hair, and that is a good thing.  That means your body needs to decide whether it will go through the process of growing the root base, root and hair or if it will just lie dormant forever.  We hope for the latter, luckily there is a product on the market call Hair Did it Go?, a hair retarding system that is applied immediately after your wax and up to 72 hours later.  This is a great add-on, it rivals laser hair removal, in 5-15 treatments, you could be virtually hair free!  Hair Did it Go retails for $15 per vial.

The Big Debate on speed

I have been waxing professionally for 13 years, 14 if you include the time I was in school.  With Brazilians specifically, you may see claims of a 7 minute wax.  That sounds great, but typically these waxers are on 15 minute time limit.  If you are my client, I do not treat you like you are on an assembly line.  I am quick but definitely efficient.  I want time to answer any questions you may have and possibly relieve an ingrown hair or two. I block out the appropriate time for your wax, because your comfort and safety are of paramount importance to me.

Finally....
Waxing isn't for everyone, there is no one size fits all approach to hair removal.  I do free consultations, over the phone or in person.  Give me a call or send a text and we can discuss it all.  828-695-1504

Now, head on over to the waxing page for all my services!
See you soon.
